Friends Against Scams was created by the National Trading Standards Scams Team. The aim is to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams. It does this by educating and empowering people.
Our Training Manager, David Bailey, is a SCAMchampion. He delivers awareness courses to community groups, warning people about types of scams and how to spot them. We also share information via our facebook page and alert people to the latest scams doing the rounds.
What is a scam?
Scams come in many forms; uninvited contact is received by email, letter, and telephone or in person making false promises to con victims out of money. There are many of these sorts of scams but some of the most common are fake lotteries, deceptive prize draws or sweep stakes, clairvoyants, computer scams, and romance scams.
The criminals attempt to trick people with flashy, official looking documents or websites, or convincing telephone sales patter, with the aim of persuading them to send a processing or administration fee, pay postal or insurance costs, buy an overvalued product or make a premium rate phone call. Doorstep Scams are crimes carried out by bogus callers, rogue traders and unscrupulous sales people who call, often uninvited, at people's home under the guise of legitimate business or trade.
How you can help
It's easy to get involved. Already more than 27,000 people, from all walks of life, have signed up to help and spread the word. You can attend a short awareness session in person or you can complete the online training (it only takes about 20 mins).
